Sir Elyan is the son of Tom, the brother of Queen Guinevere Pendragon and the brother-in-law of King Arthur Pendragon, whom he serves as a Knight of the Round Table. Prior to his knighthood he was a blacksmith, like his father before him. He is impaled by a sword enchanted by the Lady Morgana - apparently to protect Guinevere and likely to kill Arthur - and dies of his wounds in his sister's arms.
