Volition (V)

1V

“The King” is the natural leader and occupies the top of the hierarchy. This attitude is highly confident in its ability to make decisions, reach goals and have others follow suit. 1V individuals are always going to be active in completing tasks and will automatically share their ideas even when they are not prompted to do so. In many cases they may dismiss other peoples’ ideas since they believe them to be inferior in quality to their own. This can lead to unnecessarily rushed decisions when the 1V does not see a reason to contemplate their decision-making further. There might be an illusion of democratic process here, but although appearances may suggest it, 1V does not view people equally. They generally see the world as those who are at the top and those who are at the bottom. This does not necessarily mean that they will discriminate against people but this sentiment decides who they may listen to and who they will simply ignore. When 1V helps out with other people’s efforts, they may have a tendency to provide for others what they really want for themselves, making their own wishes the focus most of the time. It is also difficult for 1V to accept help from others unless they have decided to accept it or asked for it.

2V

This attitude is known as “The Nobleman” is more democratic than 1V and more accepting of a subordinate role. In leadership, 2V is more likely to delegate responsibility to others while keeping some of it themselves, as well as serving as diplomat and consensus-keeper to make sure that everyone is on the same page. 2V individuals enjoy being motivational to others and are willing to listen to other people’s struggles even if they would deal with them differently. A weak-point for 2V is their tendency to accept laziness to a greater extent than what is advisable in some situations. This is especially true if laziness comes with an acceptable excuse. 2V can become unmotivated at times but is able to pick things back up again whenever it is needed.

3V

“The Philistine” or “The Bourgeois” is anxious in regards to their own potential and motivation which makes consistent effort a source of anxiety to them. This attitude is worried about how their efforts are going to be interpreted and valued which makes it even more difficult for them to perform. As with all other 3rd position aspects, 3V is unsure of how much Will is required in any situation. This causes them to overestimate or underestimate the effort required, an uncertainty which makes them even less likely to feel sufficient in this regard. Discussions of responsibility are completely avoided if they feel uncomfortable. If anyone else tries to impose their will on 3V they may be stonewalled completely as the 3V attempts to protect itself. The weaknesses of other functions may be slightly increased for 3V individuals since they doubt their own ability to overcome those weaknesses. To find their way out of their uncertain state of mind It is important that they are able to explore themselves in a safe environment and accept their own limitations as a way to stop worrying about personal shortcomings.

4V

Known as “The Serf”, this attitude is not worried about using will unnecessarily and because of this they are usually relaxed compared to the other Will positions. 4V individuals are not concerned with improving or changing all that much, but save this until it is necessary. Pressuring a 4V individual is usually not necessary as they are either completely immune to volition or extremely sensitive and compliant. In regards to their decisions, 4V are likely to take input from others and base their choice on that. It can take time for a 4V individual to take care of issues that arise, and they often wait until the last moment to take action. It is not difficult for 4V to figure out who is capable of taking responsibility and based on that, 4V can be very good at knowing who will be successful and deciding for themselves who they can trust to get things done in a way that is difficult for themselves. To the 4V, this person represents a way to attain the results they expect from Will without being in a leadership role themselves.
