Gerta Lowe is the main character of the novel "a night divided". She is the daughter of Aldous and Katarina Lowe. Her father (who the government suspects of being part of an uprising) and middle brother Dominic go to the West in search of work a few days before the Berlin Wall went up and didn't get back in time. She, her mother and eldest brother Fritz are all in the East. A few years later, she looks over the wall and finds her Father doing a strange dance and concludes that he wants her and Fritz to dig a tunnel.
