Nathan is the son of Scott Summers (Cyclops) and Madelyne Pryor, the latter being a genetic replicant of Jean Grey created by Nathaniel Essex (Sinister), essentially making Nathan the genetic son of Jean Grey herself. Nathan was raised by Jean and Scott in an alternate future timeline where Jean taught him to control his psychic abilities in accordance to maintain his techno-organic virus. Nathan is a current member of S.W.X.R.D.
