In the early 2010s, a new wave of pop punk groups emerged, fronted by the Wonder Years, State Champs, Neck Deep, Real Friends and Knuckle Puck. These groups were "darker and more mature" than previous pop-punk bands, taking influence from 1990s emo and hardcore punk, and with "new peaks of invention, both lyrically and musically".
